Your home may be beautiful but unfortunately not all log homes have been built to today's standards and methods. If not sealed properly some homes remain drafty and use much more energy to heat than they should. Some older homes even allow rain water to seep in and access for critters to enter. If you have any gaps between your logs they should be sealed up to create a dead air space and to eliminate a nesting environment for critters.

Chinking
Chinking is a flexible, textured compound that seals the wide open gaps. Even though it looks and feels like traditional mortar, it's not. Chinking is an acrylic that adheres to logs and stretches to maintain a tight seal by following log movement.
In the past, settlers would pack the lateral groves and cracks with clay, mud, sand etc to seal their cabins. Modern Chinking gives a similar appearance. Here are some examples applied by the BC Log Finishers Team.
Energy Seal
Energy sealants are similar to chinking but made specifically to blend into the log walls and generally has a thinner profile. The sealants have less texture to match the visual characteristics of wood. They are created for homes with smaller gaps between the logs. They easily tool to a smooth, professional finish. They soften the lines on log walls and accept the color of wood finishes. In fact, some sealants can so closely match your walls, some people won't even notice the seams are sealed.
